Amazing Burgers WITH GF buns - GF review
The Gourmet Burger Kitchen (GBK) chain is a recent addition to the Canterbury eating scene and comes with a good reputation for fresh, tasty and varied burgers. Having heard on the grapevine that they also did gluten free buns with their burgers, GBK needed to be tried! GBK are streets ahead of most other burger restaurants I have tried on the gluten free front. They have thought about us enough that we have our very own gluten free menu (which you can access online as well as in the venue). This makes choosing easy and ordering clear. We know what we can eat and the staff know what we can eat. Even better, they do gluten free buns…… that’s a real bonus! You can leave your handy cling-film wrapped offering (that you sneak out to assemble your own burger when no one is watching) and just tell them you need GF. Your meal arrives looking like everyone elses and you don’t feel conspicuous or left out. The buns are pretty good too….. soft and bread-like, they taste like GBK really considered us and didn’t just add them in as an after-thought. That’s good! On the down-side, the chips have been fried in the same oil as other gluten products, which makes them unsuitable for Coeliacs or those with a gluten allergy. That’s bad! If I go out for a burger, I have chosen to go the whole hog and I want fries like everyone else. GBK need to sort this issue out! Having said this, there is a great range of burgers and other options to choose from the GF menu and the burger I had (with blue cheese) was probably one of the best burgers I have eaten out. Quality meat, cooked to order and slathered in delicious sauce. Yum! Miss GF was happy too…… although disappointed that she couldn’t eat the fries, they made up for it with grilled cob-corn and a bowl of olives (which on the plus side is far more healthy). If you have other dietary intolerences, GBK can also offer you a full allergen menu, although it is less straight forward to negotiate than the gluten free menu. When questioned about their food preparation, I was reassured that they were clear about cross-contamination issues, although I wonder whether the menu may be slightly limiting if you have other dietary needs alongside gluten intolerance.
